Mascara trifecta

Updated: Sep 22, 2020

My go mascara plan when I want volume and length to make aging eyes pop.

Mascara. It’s one of those beauty products that's a staple in every woman’s cosmetic bag. The right mascara can make your eyes pop and let’s face it, who doesn’t love long lashes. There are a lot of women who choose to wear lash extensions and they look awesome, but the time, effort and expense associated with the maintenance of it, keep me from pulling the trigger.

I’ve tried different mascaras; everything from drug store brands to the more expensive lines. In all cases, it comes down to what doesn’t flake, clump, irritate my eyes and stays on all day. As I've aged, my lashes aren't as full and they seem to have gotten shorter, so what I've been looking for is something to lengthen and fill in the bald spots. Right now, my go-to mascara and primer are by Dior. I have been using the Diorshow mascara and primer for about 4 years now and love them. Both of these are expensive, but they seem to last 6 months, so I justify the expense, since it’s a splurge, I buy it twice a year. In addition, the Dior primer has plumping qualities and I feel like my lashes are healthier as a result. If you find the price point of Dior too much, you might want to try L’Oreal Voluminous Mascara and Voluminous Primer. As a close second, you can’t beat these for the money. Combined, the two will set you back less than $15. This is my back-up mascara and primer. The only reason it’s not my primary (although it should be) is that it doesn’t seem to last as long as Dior and, as you get closer to the end of the tube, it gets really clumpy.

In the last few years, I’ve noticed that I don’t have the lashes to work with I once had. A friend introduced me to an eyelash serum. Adding the serum has made all the difference in the world. There are a lot of online reviews that highlight the pros, cons and price points of these serums. The serum I use is Neulash and like it.
