Effortless pieces and versatile basics are all you need to beat the heat

Updated: Feb 8, 2022

In my opinion summer style should be effortless and all about comfort. For some reason, the last thing I want to do is to think too hard about what to wear when the temperatures are hovering at 100 degrees. I think my first choice is to wear as little as possible.

One of my favorite go-to designers for summer is Michael Stars. The pieces are 100% cotton and breathable, perfect for lunch out with friends or a trip to the farmer’s market. I recently picked up the Scarlett Gauze Dress and paired it with Birkenstocks. I’m loving how loose and fluid it is, but stylish at the same time. Not only that, it can easily be dressed up or down. I always like it when I can get a day to evening look out of one outfit.

Recently, my twin has been raving about jumpsuits. Of the two of us, she is willing to step outside her comfort zone. Me, not so much. But, after telling me how comfortable her jumpsuits were, I decided to give one a try, and also picked up the Michael Stars Kamryn Jumpsuit in black. To my surprise, it is another versatile piece that works with everything. I’m glad I took her advice.

Another thing I’ve discovered in midlife is that style can be inspired by finding basic pieces in the most unlikely places. My sister and I discovered the best tank tops at Target. With a high neck and tapered arms, they are flattering and come in all sorts of colors. Best of all they were $8 each. We both bought multiple colors because they’re a great basic that works with shorts or skirts for a casual outing or just hanging out at home.

Since my overall style leans toward minimal – simple designs, breathable fabrics, streamlined silhouettes, jewelry helps complete my look. Although finding the right pieces can be a challenge in and of itself. I typically don’t wear a lot of jewelry, so I tend to go with simple pieces especially those that work for multiple occasions, day and night, work or a party. I appreciate anything that feels cohesive but also has something unique about it.

Also, I like to mix modern with vintage to make it interesting and keep my looks fresh. Last week I happened on a vintage embroidered straw bag. Immediately, I was smitten. It’s lightweight, roomy, and is the perfect accessory to tote things in.

Here’s to staying cool, but stylish. What are your summer style secrets? I’d love to hear them.
